About Flowers &
Sympathy

Changing trends in how we say good-bye to loved ones often leave us, our family, and our friends uncertain about how to express their condolences, especially when it comes to flowers.  We hope that this information helps you to better understand the role of flowers in marking the passing of your loved one.

Expressing sympathy and showing support is a constant need, regardless of the type of service we have. Our family and friends need to say - 'We care' in some way- whether it be with flowers or a home-cooked meal. Flowers are a well-understood and familiar means of showing support in this time of loss.  Even though we might think of flowers as a gift only of beauty, people are discovering that sympathy flowers have much greater power than only the superficial appeal. Sympathy flowers seem to bring one back to nature and closer to one’s Creator at a time when a spiritual connection has extreme value.

History of Flowers at
Funerals

Flowers have been a part of funeral and memorial traditions in nearly every culture throughout history. Flowers indeed add warmth, beauty, and dignity to the service and, for many, symbolize eternal life.

Flowers have always played an important role in burial traditions because of their soothing qualities. In ancient cultures, floral and herb essences were used to anoint the bodies of the deceased and aromatic flowers and greens were displayed.  Today, they provide a tangible expression of care and sympathy to family and friends in the passing of a loved one

Considerations when Choosing Flowers

Do you want to offer to family and intimates a remembrance of the deceased? Cut flowers seldom last longer than 10 days. You may want to consider ordering a mixture of live plants and gardens along with cut flowers (normally left at the graveside)

Do you want live plants to remain on the gravesite? Perennials make colorful decorations now and for years to come (Tulips, lilies, jonquils return year after year)  Check with your funeral director to see the live plant policies of the interring cemetery

Are you on a limited budget? Some flowers are difficult (and expensive) to obtain during certain times of the year.  Your florist can help to suggest alternatives that offer a similar look or fragrance at a lesser expense.
